Tasting Melgarejo Premium Frantoio

On the nose it offers an intense olive fruitiness with green hints of apple, grass, artichoke and green almond shell.

On the palate it combines three sensations: sweetness, very light bitterness and a somewhat more intense pepperiness, with hints of bitter almond and nuts such as walnut. A singular oil that surprises anyone familiar with Andalusian varieties.

The Melgarejo mill

In Pegalajar, in the heart of Sierra Mágina, the Melgarejo family makes its oils from the olives of its estates in Jaén and Málaga. The company was founded in 1995, but the craft goes back much further: more than two centuries of generations devoted to the olive grove.

Its Premium range brings together five oils from the best fruit of each year, and the house has received recognition such as second prize from the International Olive Council for intense green fruitiness in 2012, along with medals at international competitions in Los Angeles and Israel.

How to enjoy Melgarejo Premium Frantoio

  • Pasta with vegetables.
  • Artichokes and asparagus.
  • Carpaccio and tartare.
  • Aged cheeses.
  • Salads with nuts.

Its walnut notes harmonise naturally with cheeses and nuts, and with roasted autumn vegetables.

Frantoio came to Jaén from Tuscany and has adapted well to its soils. In the kitchen, its peppery finish and walnut notes suit Italian-inspired dishes, such as pasta with artichokes, a mushroom risotto or burrata with tomato. It also pairs very well with aged sheep's cheeses and salads with walnuts and apple.
